Video: When Pigs Leap to Freedom
The News
When a pig leaps out of a slaughter-bound truck, everyone – even pig eaters – prays that she escapes for good. We don’t know much about her, but we very much want her life to be spared.
By making a film that helps us get to know these animals more intimately and documents their dramatic transition from confinement to freedom, one animal rescuer hopes to convince carnivores to see all animals – not just the ones who escape – as individuals.
Opinion
Farm sanctuaries are filled with pigs (and other animals) who “dodged a bullet” by leaping (or falling) to freedom. Why do some of us root for these pigs but eat the others? Are they more deserving than those who didn’t have the courage or ability to jump?
Some of us DO think about what farm animals go through. I know I do – almost every day. On my commute home from work I’ve seen several 18-wheelers loaded with pigs, and I’ve made eye contact. Then I started to cry because we wouldn’t do this to people in a civilized society, so WHY do we do it to animals???
I’m at the point where I hardly ever eat meat anymore, and someday soon I hope I’m completely vegan.
Hardly eat meat? So what’s your excuse to keep doing it?
What a great idea for a film. I know what made me start not eating meat was seeing a film about factory farming and looking into the eyes of those animals and seeing my dog. All animals deserve a shot at life.
