Paper Creates Absurd News Angles to Promote Inhumane Horse Carriages

October 6, 2014 by Leave a Comment

The News

In its ongoing effort to cripple the Mayor’s plan to ban horse-drawn carriages from the streets of NYC, the Daily News, one of city’s top three papers, has created increasingly ludicrous news hooks to shift public opinion.

Last week, the Daily News reported that a Franciscan priest not only “delivered a brief equine prayer and splashed a bit of holy water on every horse’s mane” but also “saved enough water to deliver a blessing for the carriages and hay stored in the stables.”

Objective news organization? Most certainly not!

In May, the Daily News used a scare tactic:

carriage horses and mushroom

The stories have been so ridiculous that some readers think, at first glance, that they’re satire. One reader wrote, “The Daily News has become The Onion.”

The public doesn’t know why the Daily News has compromised its credibility by using its opinion and news pages to advocate for the horse-drawn carriage trade, but some speculate that it’s an underhanded way to discredit the Mayor.

In the weeks leading up to the 2013 election, the Daily News frequently published mean-spirited stories about the progressive Mr. de Blasio in an attempt to derail his candidacy. Now that he’s Mayor, the “news” organization appears to be using his support of a ban on carriages as an ongoing hook to discredit him.

Your Turn

Horse-drawn carriages cannot be operated humanely or safely in NYC for many reasons – from the congested city streets where they work to the lack of a pasture when they can graze, move freely and interact with other horses, as herd animals do. To learn more about the plight of the carriage horses and join the fight, please visit the Coalition to Ban Horse-drawn Carriages and NY-CLASS.

It’s amazing to me how many people are speaking out for the carriage drivers. Are they perhaps related to those reaping the profits from the overcharging of the passengers or those not concerned about the uncollected taxes that belong to the City. The horses be damned! Money talks!

    1. gypsyrose says:

I’m not related to or have ever met in person any of the carriage drivers or their support staff. I’m not a Teamster or a member of any other organized group that supports keeping the carriage horses. I’m involved in the fight because I know and care about horses, and I detest the idea that people who know nothing about horses should be making the laws that concern them with no input from experienced horsemen. How do I know that the activists know nothing? It’s painfully obvious to any horse person that none of you know what the H*ll you are talking about. You don’t understand normal equine behavior or body language. You anthropomorphize your feelings for theirs, and your goals for the horses are unrealistic and will ultimately harm them.
So there you have it. I’m speaking out for the horses and the people who devote their lives to them. It has NOTHING to do with money.

DeBlasio needs to make this happen already. These poor horses….it’s so sad.

  3. Tom Neee says:

You people should be ashamed for trying to destroy the jobs, and purpose of the well cared for carriage horses and the honorable livlihoods of over three hundred families-You’re losing

    1. Epona says:

Absolutely should never endorse animals exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning or extreme traffic for any reason. These animals are happy to do what is asked of them daily, but we are the caretakers and should absolutely believe that they are in harms way. Shame on you for even suggesting that exposing these animals to toxins for eight to ten hours a day is humane.

      1. Gypsyrose says:

Children in strollers are closer to street level than the horse’s nostrils. Are you worried about them also? Do you want to ban strollers?
Not one horse has been diagnosed with a respiratory disease or smog related illness. Maybe your concern is overblown.

        1. Donny Moss says:

Children in strollers aren’t being pushed IN the streets with cars for 9 hours a day. People who have rescued former NYC carriage horses have said they were diagnosed with respiratory disease (heaves) upon arrival.

          1. gypsyrose says:

The horses spend most of their time near or in Central Park. They only have a short time in the street when they commute. “People” who claim to be rescuing carriage horses have an agenda. Does anyone have veterinary proof of any horse developing heaves while in NYC? Does anyone even have proof that engine exhaust might be the cause? Heaves is usually caused by dust and mold.
