Joan’s Legacy — For Some

September 4, 2014 by Leave a Comment

The News

Most people will remember Joan Rivers as a trailblazer for women in comedy; for her unparalleled work ethic; for her irreverence; and for her advocacy, philanthropy and generosity. But some will remember her as the poster child for fur. She wore – and glamorized – fur more than just about any other public figure. And that has been a major source of frustration and anger for the countless people who dedicate themselves to ending this most egregious form of animal cruelty.

Ms. Rivers gave the impression that she had misgivings about wearing fur. When people criticized or challenged her, she asked if they wore leather, suggesting that they were just as guilty. She also attempted to justify her fur by saying that she had rescue dogs, as if the kind deed of adopting animals gave her a free pass for other forms of cruelty. When she was challenged by activists at public events, she struck back, saying that her fur was 15 or 20 years old, as if wearing old fur doesn’t generate demand for new fur. As an aside, some of her fur was, in fact, new.

In the end, Ms. Rivers’ love of fur must have outweighed any guilt that she felt for wearing it. She had many opportunities to do the right thing by renouncing fur, as her own daughter Melissa did in a commercial for PETA, but she instead defended it and, at times, displayed contempt for those who challenged her, as shown in this video taken in July, 2014:

Because of her fame and unmatched consumption of fur, Joan Rivers will be one of the faces of fur when society relegates this barbaric form of animal cruelty to the history books. Now that she’s gone, will she come face-to-face with the hundreds off animals who were tortured and killed for her vanity?

I had a drink and toasted her to hell.

    Elizabeth Forel –

What a classy and insightful and evolved comment you made! I couldn’t have said it better myself.

  3. Greg says:

Nice to see some people can disagree with her stance on fur, yet remain civil and respectful, people like Jess S propagate hatred and extremism which are not conducive to healthy opposition and debate, which may lead to change. Spewing hate and wishing death breeds violence, terrorism, war, abuse, torture,….bad stuff…peace man

  4. Sandra says:

the bottom line is…she was not a good person. Fur wearers who are aware of what goes on and continue to wear fur are not good people. At least now that she is dead less animals will have to be tortured and killed.
I think she is having to answer now for her bad deeds.

I danced happily at the news of this FURHAG’s death. This a racist speciesist’s skin will forever burn wherever she has ended up on the other side. I hope I hear of more furhags dropping dead – they ALL deserve to have their skins burned off their vile bodies to understand the suffering and torture their penchant for wearing fur has caused to millions of innocent animals. WEL, AT LEAST ONE VILE BITCH HAS FINALLY KEELED OVER – LET US CELEBRATE HER DEMISE 😀

  6. Ellen says:

I hope she rots in hell.

  7. alexis says:

Hell is paved with the skulls of dead furriers…-RIP, Joan.

  8. Rose Fanning says:

She was an ok comedian. Not one of my favorites. Her stand on fur was nauseating
enough but on top of that was her total lack of respect for the 3 girls who were held for 10 years by Ariel Castro. What she said about them was totally uncalled for and took away any need to respect her death. It basically made her look like a total ass!!!

    1. Rita Ross says:

It would have helped if you had told us what Rivers said about the 3 women held. Otherwise, your comment is totally useless.

      1. Jess S says:

Rita Ross the only one who is coming across as totally useless is YOU! Are you so lazy to Google it yourself? Or are you simply incapable of doing anything useful to educate yourself? Research it yourself dear!! You clearly don’t keep up with trending topics if months after she made those vile comments you STILL don’t know. Ugh, ignorance abounds.

        1. Rita Ross says:

Jess S. Even a normal IQ would state what Rivers said about the 3 women held by that maniac. I shouldn’t have to google anything if you had had the common sense to state what Rivers commented.

You don’t have the common decency to say that it was an oversight and state what the comment was.

No, lady. I’m not useless. Your comment was, and remains. Unless you had said what the comment was, you have most of us wondering why you wasted our
          time.

“Trending comments.” What a stupid ridiculous phrase. Why should I know everything Joan Rivers ever said? If you followed Rivers that closely, you must lead a very boring life.

          1. Rita Ross says:

Correction: It was Rose Fanning who stated that Rivers made an insulting comment re.the women held by Castro. My apologies to her. Lisa S. is the hysterical one.

  9. I am sorry to see anyone die especially under the circumstances Joan Rivers died in. Yet she had so much that one can point to, a kind of political baggage that, for me, interfered with my appreciation of her supposed attributes.

Her treatment of those who disagreed with her is well known and while humor is a cover often for anger, in her case, that just seemed plain obvious.

May she finally rest in peace and know the kind of love we all desperately search for in this life in the new life she has gone onto.

  10. Linda says:

I loved Joan Rivers and thought she was an amazing person. Kudo’s to her daughter Melissa for going against her mom and standing up for what she thought was right. It’s a shame this is the side of history Joan was on.

  11. Elizabeth Forel says:

I know you must have weighed what you said carefully and I think your post is very real and respectful. We have all heard the expression – don’t talk badly about the dead. But what you say needed to be said because it is the truth. Joan Rivers was no friend to animals. Nice that she had rescued dogs, but as you say, it did not give her a free pass to exploit others. As Albert Schweitzer said “until we extend the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself know peace.” One of my favorites.

I actually liked Joan Rivers and enjoyed her comedy. She was very funny and she was a trail blazer. But I hated that she wore fur and was not influenced by her daughter who had renounced it. I thought at one point that Dan Matthews/Peta would have an influence on her. But I guess not. Instead her wearing fur gave the seal of approval to many women who emulated her. And as you said, she made all kinds of excuses. It is too bad that she never got it.

I am sorry she died. She was really too young at 81 to go.

    1. Terry says:

It’s a shame that celebrities that you might otherwise like do some bad things. Aretha Franklin, one of my all-time favorite performers, I believe still wears fur. I hope she finally “gets it” before she goes, that wearing fur is selfish and cruel, and maybe even pass that message to her fans.
