Montreal SPCA Releases Horrific Fur Farm Video; Blames Government for Inaction

The News

According to Montreal’s SPCA, which discovered horrific conditions during a fur farm inspection, the Quebec government is “not doing enough to protect dozens of foxes and hundreds of mink kept in inhumane conditions.” A wildlife veterinarian who accompanied the SPCA said, “Dehydration was evident in all 91 foxes. Emaciation or starvation was present in many of the animals. There were a variety of injuries from broken toes, to a broken leg, to a missing eye, lesions on the tails.” The Forest Ministry did seize 16 arctic foxes due to lack of paperwork and did euthanize four foxes and one mink because they were too sick to survive. However, they left the remaining animals in their cages “to give the owner a chance to correct the situation.”

Your Turn

Being held captive for life in a small wire cage is torture in and of itself. But to be deprived of food, water and medical care on top of that? If the Forest Ministry found dogs and cats in these conditions, the perpetrators would be undoubtedly be charged with animal cruelty. The laws must be strengthened to protect all animals, not just the companion animals who bring us pleasure. Fur is among the most egregious forms of animal cruelty. And for what? A coat? We must put ourselves in the skin of these animals and imagine stress, frustration, pain and suffering they endure every day of their lives leading up to that fateful moment when they are anally electrocuted, gassed or skinned alive. And we must be their voice.

Concerned my arse, he was never concerned when they were in wire cages being killed for rich people to wear!! His only concern is purely financial!! The mink can do without your his “concern”

  5. lennon says:

Please, please, please! Never buy anything made from fur and shun anyone who does! Foxes are intelligent creatures that express all the same emotions as a dog does, and much of our own! They fear, the love, want, and most importantly the feel! These animals know what’s coming, and often they see death of others right in front of them! I invite anyone to just spend time with one of these animals and just to see what bright living beings they are! I’ve spent a lifetime trying my best to save as many of these fragile little creatures as I can. I cry often for them and pray that I can meet each of them in another life. And one last thing I swear by, if I could sacerifce my self to end their suffering I would…

  6. Rita Ross says:

With all due respect to the Montreal SPCA, I find it hard to believe that they were NOT aware of the horrendous conditions on these fox farms. How about publicity in newspapers, flyers handed out to the citizens, etc.,
about these fur farms? The way this story read, I betcha nothing will be done.

  7. Eve says:

Le Québec est un ATTARDÉ en matière de protection des animaux & DOIT voter de nouvelles lois pour PUNIR SÉVÈREMENT les bourreaux ou autres braconniers dégénérés !!!!

  8. Darlene Baneky says:

They should be ashamed of themselves and I do believe in karma. There should be no fur farms period. To keep such sock animals like demands intervention!

  9. Sarah hood says:

Incredible these “farms” are allowed to practice atall! This has to be stopped!

  12. Tiffanie Kibsgaard says:

can not believe that people should be so cruel to the foxes, they should be in the wild not in a cage

  13. Jen Glasser-Honickman says:

That’s a great idea to get this letter sent to the Minister of Forests. If enough people send the letter it may help.

  14. Ty savoy says:

The price the fur farmers are getting for a mink pelt is down about 70% this year. Last year it was over $100 per pelt. This year down to about $30-$40 per pelt.

Here in Nova Scotia, some fur farmers are getting their gov’t loan payments deferred because of this downturn in price. This could mean mink farmers here who are just making a profit, could now be losing money. They could be cutting back on employees, building and cage maintanence, and any sort of animal care. (a joke really, in this industry, where animals are units of producton).

I fear conditions like on this Quebec farm could be more widespread than anyone knows.

Here is a google pin map I made showing the fur farms in the Maritime Provinces. About 1.5 million mink are right now suffering in cages here in Nova Scotia, where about half of the mink ‘farms’ in Canada are located.

The size of many these factory farms is incredible. If you zoom in on Willowdale Farms, near Berwick… I could 109 mink sheds. The name shed belies the reality of the size of the buildings. Each of these mink sheds averages about 100 meters in length. Two rows of caes in each shed. Do the math and that’s 22 km of cages if laid out end to end. ON ONE FARM. There are about 130 of these mink ‘farms’ in NS.

  16. Annie Arnaudon says:

This is totally unacceptable. The fur trade needs to be abolished. Leave the fur on the animals. They need it WE dont.

  17. Debra Jermy says:

why do we still need to wear fur? There are so many different man made materials now that we have no need to kill innocent animals at all and especially in such a cruel and vile way. It is not necessary and is definitely not glamorous!!!

  18. Karel De Smedt says:

    Stop this, please!

  19. wendy schedel says:

for gawds sake step up and do something to stop this abuse!!! shame on those in charge, , all fur farms should be closed down they are barbaric

  20. penny says:

I hate when people kill such sweet animals they need to stop with cruelty they have a right to be here in this world and people are so greedy they rather destroy their homes then they get run over or end up in a place that is killing them by not feeding them and when they are sick they need to be stopped how would they like it if they were in cages with no water or food and medicine to help them then they will know how they feel but they may have no heart

  21. Aathi Monica Ramasamy says:

  31. Dave Gagleard says:

PLZ WRITE TO CANADA MINISTER. LTR SAMPLE/EMAIL BELOW. Non-Canadians, take off the “VOTER” part. TO: ministre-mffp@mffp.gouv.qc.ca — To whom it may concern; Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs 5700, 4e Avenue Ouest
    Québec (Québec) G1H 6R1

    Dear Minister Laurent Lessard,
I am writing to demand that you and the Ministry of Forests, Fauna and Parks (Ministère de la Forêts, Faune, et Parcs – MFFP) take immediate action to support the Montreal SPCA and prosecute the heinous crimes against animals taking place in Quebec.

I am OUTRAGED by the inaction by your ministry towards this sensitive and URGENT matter, already an international outrage, further confirming the negative reputation to our country as “Canada: No Country for Animals”.

Multiple inspections in recent weeks have revealed that the foxes are in critical condition and suffer from serious health problems including dehydration, emaciation, toe fractures, tail injuries, tooth fractures, ear and eye infections, internal bleeding and neurological issues. Further, the condition of these foxes has been steadily deteriorating. Wildlife experts, veterinarians, the Montreal SPCA and Humane Society International/Canada have stressed the necessity of applying provincial legislation applicable to foxes and other wildlife in captivity in order to immediately seize these animals, yet government authorities are refusing to take action.

Take the time to look at the photos and videos of these animals and try to find a way to explain it away. Your role as the Minister of Forests, Fauna and Parks includes enforcement of laws when necessary. There has never been a time that has required action more than this.

As a taxpayer and a voter, I expect to see immediate and public movement from yourself and your Ministry on this important matter.

We have just seen encouraging new civil code implementation in Quebec recognizing animals as sentient beings, however the actions in Quebec do not reflect what is on paper, this is unethical and misleading information for us tax payers if you do not live up to the newly recommended civil code. I am requesting a response and confirmation to my letter.
