The South African SPCA is suing the people responsible for the death of a blindfolded giraffe who smashed his head on a bridge while being transported in a trailer on a highway near Johannesburg.

News & Opinion

One way to prevent tragic accidents with wild animals is to not move them in the first place!  The news media did not report on why these giraffes were being transported, but I can’t  help but think they were kidnapped from the wild for a zoo or another commercial enterprise.  To learn more about the inherent cruelty of zoos and find out how you can help, please visit Last Chance For Animals.

Pamela Anderson Protests Denmark’s “Barbaric, Psychotic Frenzy”

August 5, 2014 by Leave a Comment

The News

Actress and animal rights activist Pamela Anderson traveled to Denmark’s Faeroe Islands to join Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in calling for an end to the annual slaughter of 1,000 pilot whales.  She called a four century-old pilot whale drive a “barbaric, psychotic frenzy.” Sea Shepherd has led opposition to the drive since the 1980s.

News & Opinion

What could be crueler than rounding up 1,000 gentle and intelligent pilot whales and mercilessly slaughtering them in the name of tradition?  Scandinavian countries are among the most progressive in the world, but the Danish are somehow able to celebrate or turn a blind eye to this annual bloodbath.  Please help Sea Shepherd put an end to what Pamela Anderson aptly describes as a “barbaric, psychotic frenzy.”

Leonardo DiCaprio Raises $25 Million to Protect Wild Animals

July 29, 2014 by Leave a Comment

The News

At a fundraiser in the South of France for his charitable foundation, Leonardo Di Caprio raised $25 million to protect wild animals.  He said, “The wild species that depend on us to protect their habitat, like tigers whose numbers have plummeted to under 3,200 left in the wild, or African elephants, who are being slaughtered at a rate of over 30,000 a year for their ivory tusks — they have no voice. We must be their ambassadors. We must be their protectors. We must stop their slaughter. We must now make an effort to protect the rich biodiversity that could allow nature to eventually recover.”

News & Opinion

Some people applaud when celebrities become advocates for a cause; others wish they’d go away.  Regardless of your position, celebrities can and do effect change.  It was in part because Alec Baldwin narrated Meet Your Meat that I watched the video on factory farming and went vegan.  I am grateful to the dozens of stars who lend their powerful voices to animals.  Of course, we’d all like some celebrities to vanish — like Liam Neeson, who is a spokesman for NYC’s inhumane horse-drawn carriage trade, and Anthony Bourdain, who defends and promotes foie gras, the a “delicacy of despair.”

Wimbledon Champ Removes “Hunting” as Local Activity from His Hotel’s Website

June 24, 2014 by Leave a Comment

The News

A letter from PETA has prompted tennis star Andy Murray from removing references to hunting from his hotel’s website.  Here’s an excerpt: “The idea of hunting cats and dogs, such as your beloved Maggie May and Rusty, would rightly make most of us sick, and yet the animals listed on the Cromlix website have exactly the same capacity to feel pain and suffer.”

News & Opinion

Hunting is the only “sport” in which only one team knows that it’s playing.  One could argue that eating meat from free roaming animals who are hunted is more humane than eating factory farmed animals, but I can’t help but think that the majority of people who hunt do so because they enjoy killing.  And, while it’s true that the hunted animals lived freely before being killed, they often leave behind offspring who are too young to take care of themselves.  To the humans, hunting is a recreational activity, but to the the animals who are killed and orphaned, it’s a tragedy.  To learn more about hunting and to see what you can do to stop it, please visit PETA’s hunting page.

Poachers Kill Kenya’s Largest Elephant

June 13, 2014 by Leave a Comment

The News

Poachers in Kenya have killed Satao, “one of the last surviving great tuskers, bearers of genes that produce bull elephants with huge tusks reaching down to the ground.”  Satao’s murder comes on the heels the slaughter of another “legendary tusker, Mountain Bull, deep inside the forests of Mt. Kenya.”  Apparently, Satao was “so intelligent that he knew he needed to protect his enormous tusks by intentionally hiding in bushes so they couldn’t be seen.”  And, while he did survive one brutal attack with poisoned arrows, he ultimately fell victim to the ivory trade.

News & Opinion

Elephants are among the most intelligent land animals.  They communicate with language; they visit the gravesides of their deceased family members; and, as mentioned in the article, they hide from their biggest enemy, humans. They know they’re under attack, but their ability to defend themselves against armed poachers is limited.  Find out how you can help protect them by visiting The Tsavo Trust.
