After using a horse to crash into a protester (saboteur) at an illegal fox hunt in the U.K., hunters blocked the road with their vehicles to prevent the ambulance from attending to the victim, who broke five ribs. The attack was caught on camera, and the footage will be turned over to the authorities.

People who hunt and kill for sport are, by definition, violent. It should therefore come as no surprise that some hunters also attack people who get in their way. In this video, hunters punch protesters who are  blocking an illegal dig-out of a fox who is hiding in a hole.

Hunting with hounds was outlawed in the U.K. in 2005, but it continues due to lack of enforcement. As a result, the 51 year old Hunt Saboteurs Association continues to operate, “protecting our wildlife from the ‘sportsmen’ who get their kicks from killing.”

The police are so accustomed to protecting the hunters that the saboteurs must continue to wear masks to protect their identities. Unsurprisingly, the activists, who engage in non-violent tactics to save lives, continue to be vilified as “terrorists” by lawmakers and the media while the illegal hunters are portrayed as the victims. One way to thank and help the hunt saboteurs who put their safety on the line for the animals is to support their life-saving work.

Bullfight fans who cheer when terrified animals are stabbed to death seized on the chance to commit their own acts of brutality. When 150 members of the anti-bullfight group CRAC Europe jumped into the arena in Southern France, both fans and police attacked them with batons, tear gas and a metal bar, sending four to the hospital. In his description of the harrowing experience, CRAC president Jean-Pierre Garriques said, “Several aficionados attempted to throw activists over the side of the ring.” By jumping into the arena and disbursing, the activists had hoped to stop or delay the bullfight. What they did not anticipate was the police and fans violently beating them to the cheers of onlookers. Raw footage:

Violence begets violence, so bullfight fans attacking protesters should come as no surprise. Still, the degree of the beatings is unexpected in a developed country like France. Ironically, bullfighting is punishable by two years in prison for animal cruelty in the 90% of the country where it’s illegal.” Learn more about bullfight cruelty and discourage your friends who visit France, Mexico and Spain from attending one.

On August 18, we asked people to submit letters to the Miami Herald in response to their story  about animal-loving philanthropists who, unfortunately, donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Miami Zoo. We hoped that letters, if published, would serve opportunity to educate Miami Herald readers about the inherent cruelty of zoos. A letter from at least one TheirTurn subscriber, Mickey Kramer from NYC, was published. In it, he writes, “Zoo animals, despite any talk of education and conservation, are kept captive for life . . . For those with disposable income and who care for animals, may I suggest donating” to a sanctuary where the animals are not “used as exhibits.”

Eighty animal rights activists descended upon NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s mansion for a protest, but the media homed in on one: 92-year old Natasha Brenner. The Coalition to Ban Horse-drawn Carriages organized the protest to pressure the Mayor into fulfilling his campaign promise to end horse-drawn carriage rides in midtown Manhattan. Ms. Brenner, who has participated in hundreds of animal rights protests over the years and has been an articulate and staunch advocate for the horses, told reporters that “nothing would keep her away” and that she won’t back down until horses are “no longer pulling carriages in the streets of New York City.”

NYC’s animals are lucky to have Natasha Brenner as an advocate, and NYC’s activists are lucky to have her as a role model.

The good news is that the Aspen Art Museum shut down its exhibit of wandering African tortoises and sent them to a tortoise sanctuary in a warmer climate. The bad news is that the international publicity generated by this controversy could trigger other artists and museums to use animals as a way of drawing attention to themselves. The museum, which has, in essence, been rewarded for exploiting animals, says that their decision to close the exhibit a month early was based on the cold forecast, not the protests.

While the publicity surrounding the tortoises might be the reason why the “exhibit” was shut down, it might also be the reason why other artists decide to exploit animals. In fact, we don’t need to look far to see a more recent example. A NYC-based fashion designer has received far more attention than he otherwise would because he is using horse-drawn carriages as part of his runway show in early September. If the activists ignore the exploiters, then they won’t get the attention they want. On the flip side, the animals won’t get the help they need.
