Maker of Hellman’s Mayonnaise Attempts to Crush Cruelty-free Alternative

The News

Unilever, the $60 billion dollar corporation that makes Hellman’s mayonnaise, is attempting to cripple Hampton Creek, a start up company that makes Just Mayo, an egg-free alternative that is growing in popularity. Claiming that mayonnaise, by definition, contains eggs, Unilever is arguing in federal court that Hampton Creek must either add eggs to its recipe or remove Just Mayo from grocery store shelves.

"Relax, Max. It's Just Mayo."

“Relax, Max. It’s Just Mayo.”

Unilever has reasons for concern — and not just because Just Mayo is stealing market share from Hellmann’s. The CEO of Hampton Creek, Josh Tetrick, is aiming to “create a whole new model” that “takes animals out of the equation.”  He elaborates in his interview with Jane Velez-Mitchell:

In his 2013 TED Talk, Tetrick points out that eliminating animal agriculture could dramatically reduce greenhouse gasses, hunger and inefficiency, not to mention the inhumane treatment of animals.

While Tetrick describes eggs as “the end result of a hen’s ovulation cycle,” he does acknowledge their “important role” in recipes. They cause cookies to bind; they hold oil and water together in mayonnaise; and they make cakes rise.  He argues, however, that plants can do the same thing if we harness their potential, With Beyond Mayo, Tetrick has proven that plant-based foods can both satisfy our palates and feed people in a way that doesn’t destroy the environment or “misalign our values.”

Omg, shame on you Hellmans/ unilever! You think we the sheeple of the usa are clueless and will not boycott you over this? Wakey wakey ! Consider this my official notice that I am skipping your mayo from now on. We are quickly becoming educated consumers who are rightfully disgusted by big ags heinous & hidden abuse of animals , negative enviromental impact , & profit before people business models. So you and other mega ag corporate interests have bought off the FDA , so what, we know that , based on recent right to know gmo debacle, and the fact know that most top brands of ice cream now contain anti freeze. Yes, anti freeze, Because the FDA decided ( several millions of dollars of DC favors later ) that since anti freeze was not a food , it did not have to be listed under ingrediants!!! Big ag, we the sheeple are onto you and once folks google your antics the picture that emerges time & again is that you can not be trusted . Shame on you ! We get the real deal from Corucopia institute and Food Babe and other pioneers who respect truth and the consumers intelligence. Unilever , thank you for exposing yourself as the bully you are. We are not a bunch of chickens you can push around, we shall answer your ultimate tackyness to sue this start up by supporting more & more sustainable businesses. Please pass the yummy “Just Mayo,” we’re informed and so will be skipping Hellmans altogether thank you!

  2. Hellman’s/Best Foods/Unilever is only doing this because there is finally competition. Just Mayo is placed right next to conventional brands on the shelf, and priced at a competitive price, and not $7-8 dollars a jar, like my former favorite, Vegenaise. (We love you Vegenaise, I really do, but we gotta go with the half priced mayo!)

  3. Farrah says:

Why does Just Mayo have to add eggs? Totally ridiculous! I love the picture of the dog and the Just Mayo. LOL!

  4. paula young says:

I hope this happens in my lifetime…..come on…open your hearts! We were never meant to eat meat or dairy!!!

  5. MARY says:

It’s amazing to me that Unilever, a company that makes one of the most unhealthy products in the world would criticize any other company for anything. They would be smart to drop this lawsuit.

  6. John Mooter says:

The folks from Hellman’s are bullies and apparently are afraid people will move to the better product, which is healthier and cruelty free.

  7. Holly Hazard says:

Just Mayo is delicious! It’s zippy and creamy and there are no worries leaving a salad out on a hot day. A great product.

  8. Teresa Valdes says:

I can’t wait for food to be cruelty free. I will never buy Hellmans or unilever because of the cruielty !

  9. Allie Tennant says:

Vegans will never buy Unilever products, as Unilever does unspeakable tests on animals, so trying to shut this vegan company down isn’t going to get us to buy your products instead.

    1. Joan Diego says:

Animal cruelty for food production must stop!

  10. Bonnie Boduk says:

NO MORE CRUELTY IN FOOD PRODUCTS!! No more bullying Hampton Creek. Put on your collective Big Boy Pants and MAKE A CHANGE!
